After studying at Croydon College, Trent Polytechnic and the Royal Academy Schools sometime last century Martin has painted continuously and exhibited extensively.
Martin is an enthusiastic screen printer. He paints directly on to the screen, eschewing photographic techniques or digital processes he creates richly layered prints capturing local cityscapes of Brixton and West Norwood and beyond as well as more haunting pieces based on anecdotes, poems and songs.
Other prints such as ‘South London Procrastination Club’ or ‘Panic and Give Up’ reveal a wry humour.
The relationship between the forms of trees outside my studio and the shadows they cast have provided an intense period of study at different times through different light effects. The most striking in early morning when they are contre- jour, against the sun – facing due east or the golden hour in the evening when the last of the setting sun radiates an intense warm cast across the green foliage turning everything into a heightened golden palette. The handling has become looser and the first careful faithful representations finally given way to abstraction of the view in an emotive experience of the landscape.
